Parent's evening the last hurrah.
Tired teachers waiting upon the eager parents and the no so eager children perhaps, you shuffle into a gall to see what I can only describe as a speed dating scene where you hot seat your way through the various subjects.
Subject after subject it was an A or an A* with a shocking C in French but we had be pre warned of that. I suppose there is a tinge of sadness as life rolls on but what really got me was I am more and more conscious of what I am saying a lot.
I am very big on handwriting where my son is concerned and this wasn't a problem it seems where my son is concerned as one teacher said "my handwriting is worse" then came the other questions "what could he be doing more, what revision books does he need, what websites could he be looking at " and at the end my son thought I had looked for the negative. And you know what I think he is right I have had a hellish 2 days lack of sleep, been ill, then my husband has developed a Dickensian cough , the cat doesn't like whiskers any more.
Wait there I go.
SO
STOP
Positive time.
I need to be mindful of my outlook in how I speak as children are perceptive to how you speak at any age.
So tomorrow is a new day a new bright outlook pay it forward with a simple kindness as pay it forward doesn't have to be a tangible gift.

Surely that predicted grade is an excuse for a holiday to France soon?
ReplyDeletedoes it make me a bad parent .. we didn't go to ours .. having had a report a few weeks ago we kind of felt that it would waste time? eeek
ReplyDeleteNot you aren't a bad parent !
Deletewe knew he would be all A 's
it was a long evening
I think everyone is too hard on their kids at times, we just want the best for them!
ReplyDeletePaying it forward with kindness is a wonderful idea. I know my tongue is too sharp at times where a kind word would be a better thing to do x
ReplyDeleteI have to admit I hated parents evening when I was a child - I often used to have to go with my parents and it was sooooo booorrringg lol
ReplyDeleteI get this so wrong too, my son is bright and I seem to be able to hone in on that one negative that really isn't worth worrying about.
ReplyDeleteParent's evening next week all to get seen but I do try to accept my girls for what they are with no expectations, we'll see how I get on with that
ReplyDeleteI agree with Eric it's defintely time for a holiday in France, and I know just the place....we've still got one week left in August!!!! Sorry couldn't resist!
ReplyDeleteSounds as though you were trying to be supportive - and mostly As and A*s? That's wonderful!
ReplyDeletei hate parents evening, its just another excuse for parents to blab about their perfect children doing so well its not great for those who actually struggle with learning on a daily basis x
ReplyDeleteBrilliant predicted grades for your son. I think we have a natural tendency to focus on the weaker elements, I know I do and I do try not to!
ReplyDeleteIt definitely sounds like time for a holiday esp with all those A's! That's amazing. I hate parents evening those. Did when I was a kid and dont overly enjoy it now!
ReplyDeleteWow hasn't he done well. I think parents evening can be a real challenge for the parents and the teachers
ReplyDeleteI never liked parents evenings; some times they can be useful but most of the time they are really just a big waste of time.
ReplyDeleteI can be guilty of focusing on the negatives too....although I did laugh about your cat deciding it didn't like Whiskers anymore (sorry!)
ReplyDeleteThey are under so much pressure aren't they. It can be hard not to focus on the negatives because at the end of the day all you want them to do is their best. It's hard getting the balance right though...my daughter took my lack of 'nagging' as disinterest when in fact I just didn't want to pile on more pressure...arghhh. Anyway, those grades sound fab so fingers crossed.
ReplyDeleteWell done. It's hard not to focus on the negatives. Sounds like you have a great kid and you are doing great as a mum x
ReplyDeleteSound advice. Children are perceptive, and I need to remember it.
ReplyDeleteYou are so right that we have to be careful of how we speak in the presence of our children because they will soak it all in. I need to remember this from time-to-time.
ReplyDeleteI always try to be positive but always look out for things that can be improved on
ReplyDeleteI always try to be as positive as possible, it's a mind set I forced myself into after a time dealing with some depression and it really works for me! x
ReplyDeleteAww it's always a bit sad when our kids point things out, our inadequacies (so to speak)... but sometimes it's necessary to bring it to our attention! Bless your boy! He sounds like he is doing amazing at school, mine is doing his GCSE's in 7 weeks and I'm struggling to make him revise, he's doing some but not enough :(
ReplyDeleteI'm dreading parents evenings that involves more than one teacher and are longer than 5 minutes long.
ReplyDeleteI didn't bother with Emmy's last one as I was ill, naughty me
